Korfball scoring: the rules and a free scoring app
Korfball is a mixed team sport played at South African schools and universities. Each team has four women and four men, and players score by throwing the ball through a basket (the korf) on a 3.5 m post. Our free korfball scorer counts the goals, records who scored and reminds you when the teams must switch zones.
Watch: how to play korfball
Scoring
- Each goal is worth one point, including goals scored from a penalty.
- A player may not shoot when they are being defended closely by an opponent, and may not run with the ball.
- In beach korfball, goals from the two-point zone count 2 points. Don't confuse korfball with ringball, a different sport where a goal is worth 2 points and a penalty from behind the line 3.
Zones and switching
The court is divided into two zones. Each team has two women and two men attacking in one zone and the same number defending in the other. After every two goals (scored by either team), the players switch: attackers become defenders and defenders become attackers. The app counts the goals and shows a Switch zones reminder at the right moment. Teams also change ends at half-time.
Match length
International matches are usually two halves of 25 minutes. Some competitions play four shorter periods, and school matches are often shorter still. Choose a preset or set your own times in the app.
How to use the korfball scorer
- Enter the team names and choose the match length.
- Start the clock and tap Goal or Penalty when a team scores. Add the scorer if you like.
- Watch for the Switch zones banner after every second goal.
- Record yellow and red cards with Card. The finished match is saved under My results.
These notes summarise the International Korfball Federation rules for club, school and university play. Follow your competition's own regulations for official matches.
