Privacy policy

Last updated: 7 October 2026 (problem reports and scoreboard added)

This policy explains what information is processed when you use sportscoring.co.za (the "site"), including our scoring apps, why it is processed and what choices you have. We apply the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) of South Africa. For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, we also apply the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR.

Information we process

Scoring apps

You do not need an account to use the apps. Names and scores you enter are used only to run the app on your screen.

  • The scoring apps save your finished results (and, in most apps, the match in progress) in your browser's local storage on your device, so you can continue after a refresh and see them under My results. This data is not sent to us. You can delete it on the My results page or by clearing your browser data.
  • The table tennis apps keep everything in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our server.
  • The simple, advanced and beach volleyball apps send your match settings and completed match results (team or player names and scores) to our server. This shows a list of your recent matches. The list is stored in a temporary session linked to a session cookie. It is not shared with anyone and is deleted when the session expires, normally when you close your browser. You can also clear it with the app's clear history button.

Please do not enter sensitive personal information as player names. First names or nicknames work fine.

Spectator scoreboard

The live scoreboard reads the current score from your browser's storage on the same device. A sponsor logo you add to the scoreboard is stored only in your browser and is never uploaded.

Problem reports

If you use Report a problem, we receive your message, your email address if you give it, and, if you leave the box ticked, technical details: the page address, your browser and screen size, recent error messages and the score of the match in progress. Reports are emailed to us and kept in a private log for up to 12 months, only to find and fix problems. A shortened, one-way code derived from your IP address is used to limit abuse.

Server logs

Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically records technical information when you load a page: your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the referring page and the time of the request. These logs are used to keep the site secure and working. They are kept for a limited time and are not used to identify you.

Email

If you email us, we use your email address and message only to reply to you. We delete the correspondence when it is no longer needed.

Cookies and advertising

The site is funded by advertising from Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to show ads, limit how often you see an ad, measure ad performance and prevent fraud. Where allowed, they may also use cookies to show ads based on your interests and your previous visits to this and other websites.

Visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland are asked for consent through a Google-certified consent management platform before personalised ads or non-essential cookies are used. You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block all cookies, the volleyball apps' recent-match list will not work. All other app features will still work.

Videos

Our rules guides include "how to play" videos hosted on YouTube. The video player is not loaded until you press play, and it then loads from YouTube's privacy-enhanced domain (youtube-nocookie.com). Before you press play, only the video's preview image is loaded from YouTube's image server. Once you play a video, YouTube's own privacy policy applies.

Fonts

The scoring apps load web fonts from Google Fonts. When a font is loaded, your browser connects to Google's servers and shares your IP address. Google states that it does not use this to build profiles. The other pages of the site use fonts hosted on our own server.

Legal basis (GDPR)

We process server logs and the session cookie on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing a secure, working service. Personalised advertising cookies are used only with your consent where the law requires it.

Sharing and international transfers

We do not sell personal information. Information is processed by our hosting provider and, for advertising, by Google and its certified partners, some of which are outside South Africa. These providers are bound by their own privacy terms and applicable data-transfer safeguards.

Children

The site is meant to be used by people of all ages to score sport, but it is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you can ask to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, object to or restrict processing, and withdraw consent at any time. Email us at info@sportscoring.co.za. In South Africa you may also complain to the Information Regulator (inforegulator.org.za). In the EEA or UK, you may complain to your local data protection authority.

Changes

We will update this page if our practices change, for example when we add optional saving of match results. The date at the top shows the latest version.
