Touch rugby scoring: the rules and a free scoring app
Touch rugby is played socially at schools, universities, offices and on beaches across South Africa. It is fast, mixed and non-contact, and the scoring is simple. Our free touch scorer keeps the time and the touchdowns, and records who scored.
Watch: how to play touch rugby
The basics
- A touchdown is scored by placing the ball on or over the scoring line and is worth one point. There are no kicks or conversions.
- The attacking team has six touches to score. After the sixth touch, possession changes over.
- A standard game is two halves of 20 minutes with a 5-minute half-time. Social leagues and tournaments often play shorter halves.
Breaking a draw: the drop-off
When a knockout game ends level, many competitions use a drop-off. Both teams take players off the field, so there is more space, and play continues until a team scores. The first touchdown wins. If the final half ends level, the app lets you record a draw or the drop-off winner.
How to use the touch rugby scorer
- Enter the team names and choose the match length.
- Start the clock and tap Touchdown each time a team scores. Add the scorer's name or number if you want the stats.
- End each half when the referee does. The result, score by half and scorers are saved under My results.
These notes summarise the Federation of International Touch rules for social and school play. Competition rules, such as sin bins and drop-off details, vary by organiser.
